Programs
Please choose two units of programs for each morning or afternoon session:
Kimono
1 UNIT
The kimono is the traditional Japanese garment. Although at one time, it was commonly worn by everyone every day, it is now worn most often for special occasions. Its basic shape has not changed in centuries. Only the design and fabric have changed with the times.
Students will have the opportunity to dress-up in Yukata (summer casual kimono) and Happi.
Japanese Food
1UNIT
Traditional and modern Japanese food will be shown with “Food Samples”, which are displayed at restaurants so that you know exactly what you get.
Students will watch demonstration of making “Chirashi-zushi”, home-cooked Sushi, then will have an opportunity to taste it.
Festivals and Dance
1UNIT
There are many annual events and community festivals in Japan. Display figures for children related events will be shown. Students will learn Folk dance (Bon-odori) wearing Festival jackets (Happi) and headband (Hachimaki).
Crafts
1UNIT
Students will make age-appropriate crafts.
G1,2&3: Using a paper cut out, students will design their own charming Kokeshi (Japanese wooden doll)
G4,5&6: Book mark doll made with exquisite chiyogami Japanese paper (additional cost is applicable).
Japanese
Writing System
1 UNITS
There are three kinds of letters/characters in Japanese. Students will try out writing them and make a book mark with their writings.
Medieval Japan and Samurai
2 UNITS
Samurai were members of the military nobility class from the late 12th century until they were abolished during the Meiji era in the late 1870’s. This was considered the Medieval period in Japan.
Students will watch a demonstration of the Japanese martial art of kendo, and then will have the opportunity to practise their skill using a shinai.
Tea Ceremony
1 UNIT
CHANOYU or SADO is an aesthetic form of serving and drinking powdered green tea called MATCHA. The spirit of the ceremony, influenced by Zen, aims to purify one's soul.
Two volunteer students will participate in Ceremony as guests. All students will taste tea and sweets.
Origami
1UNIT
Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. The creativity for transforming a square sheet of paper into dimensional shapes is infinite.
Students will learn to make age-appropriate origami figures[designs].
Toys and
Games
1UNIT
Students will be shown the safe use of traditional toys such as Kendama, Hagoita and Daruma Otoshi.
Story Telling
1UNIT
KAMISHIBAI (paper drama) is a form of storytelling accompanied by a sequence of pictures. This gives a more dramatic effect than telling stories with an ordinary book. An old Japanese fable is told in this method.
Hands on Calligraphy
2 UNITS
This hands-on program is a half-day workshop to provide students with an opportunity to write Japanese characters on Japanese paper with SUMI ink.
